UX leadership

About

Hi, I’m Jerrod.

For more than 20 years I have led corporate design and research teams and projects.  I pride myself on building strong UX organizations and growing businesses: I’ve contributed to $225M+ in annual incremental revenue to the bottom line, and my teams have created and redesigned products used by billions of people.

I am presently head of design for Google Drive, responsible for the web, desktop, Android and iOS experiences for the 1 billion people who use the product. Before that I led UX for Google Cloud Platform’s free trial, onboarding, web console (navigation, search, etc.), and mobile experiences. At Google I have led and managed UX design, research, writing, and UX engineering staff, and I created a substantial portion of Google’s training for new UX managers.

In a prior role I headed UX for U.S. airline Alaska Airlines, establishing its first web UX team and leading the company through a major ecommerce redesign and an omnichannel rebranding serving 10s of millions of customers. Before that I led UX for Amazon.com features used by 100s of millions of customers worldwide, such as the online order history, order emails & notifications, online help, 'Contact Us,' and chat, across all devices: mobile, desktop, Kindle, & TV. And I cut my UX teeth as a designer and design leader at Boeing, creating UX standards for its software, web applications and mobile apps, guiding designs meant for airlines, governments, and employees alike, and leading UX projects related to aircraft assembly, aircraft maintenance, and more generalized product experiences.

I thrive on solving complex business problems through great design and research and growing teams to do the same. My specialty is UX team leadership in an enterprise context. I pride myself on building and leading highly effective, empowered UX teams and setting product vision to achieve business goals.  I love business strategy, vision, and planning as much as I like discussing interaction design and user research.

Lastly, I have an academic background in UX, with a Ph.D. and Master's from the Department of Human-Centered Design & Engineering from the University of Washington, where I served on the department's advisory board, won its Mikey award for service, and a gave its 2017 graduation address. I write and present on UX matters because, well, I love the discipline and I want to see it grow through the contributions of the community at large.

Thanks for stopping by! Want to chat? Feel free to drop me a line!
